On March 21st, students from Hübschmann·Zhan School visited the mysterious Shenyang Meteorological Bureau. With World Meteorological Day approaching on March 23rd, the visit was a perfect opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of this global event. Meteorology is something both familiar and unfamiliar to us — we experience weather changes daily, yet the complex science and professional operations behind them often remain unknown. This visit gave students the chance to uncover the mysteries of meteorology and explore the daily work of weather professionals.
Unveiling the Secrets of Meteorology
Students explored various meteorological instruments and learned the scientific principles behind weather forecasting. They were introduced to the process of weather prediction and reporting, and learned basic meteorological knowledge through multimedia animations, sound, light, electricity, and other modern technologies. A range of scientific tools — including models and interactive games — helped demonstrate knowledge about meteorological science, atmospheric circulation, weather patterns, and disaster warnings.
They also learned about the fascinating concept of artificial rainfall. Experts explained that under drought or specific weather conditions, rainfall can be increased through human intervention. The idea that humans can scientifically influence weather sparked deeper interest and understanding in meteorological science. The blending of meteorology and astronomy added another layer of intrigue, as students explored the ever-changing nature of weather.
DIY Weathervanes
Transforming into little meteorologists, students assembled mini weather stations and created their own weathervanes. Guided by staff, they pieced together each component and watched proudly as their handcrafted weathervanes spun gently in the breeze. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of weather monitoring techniques.
This visit to the meteorological bureau was highly rewarding. Students not only witnessed the complexity and precision behind meteorological work but also gained a deeper appreciation for how meteorological science impacts daily life, agriculture, and transportation. We believe that from now on, these students will not only pay closer attention to weather changes but also carry a stronger enthusiasm for scientific discovery.
