As safety education is increasingly valued today, Hübschmann·Zhan School successfully held an earthquake and fire drill on November 15th, enhancing both teachers' and students' emergency response capabilities in dealing with unexpected events.
We began with a fire safety training session for all teachers. During the training, the causes, prevention measures, and response strategies for earthquakes and fires were explained in detail. This training helped teachers better understand the importance of fire safety and laid a solid foundation for guiding students through the subsequent drills.
To simulate real-life conditions, we randomly activated the alarm during the drill, conducting the earthquake and fire drills sequentially. During the earthquake exercise, students quickly took cover under their desks, protecting their heads with backpacks or arms, and curling up to minimize exposed body parts. The entire campus fell silent, with only the alarm echoing through the air as if a real earthquake were occurring. After a brief moment, the second alarm signaled the start of evacuation. Under the guidance of their teachers, students swiftly and orderly evacuated the classrooms along the predetermined evacuation routes.
The fire drill began immediately after the earthquake exercise. Simulated fire sources were ignited on campus, creating thick smoke. After all teachers and students had evacuated to the sports field, the person in charge quickly conducted a headcount. The entire process was tense but orderly—busy yet not chaotic.
Subsequently, we conducted CPR training on the sports field. Professional instructors explained the CPR procedure in detail, including how to assess the victim's consciousness, breathing, and pulse, as well as how to perform chest compressions and artificial respiration correctly. After the explanation, students eagerly participated in the practical exercises. Under the patient guidance of the teachers, they gradually mastered the basic skills of CPR and understood the importance of this first aid technique in saving lives during critical moments.
Following the CPR training, a demonstration on how to use fire extinguishers took place. The instructor demonstrated the correct procedure by aiming at the base of the simulated fire and spraying it with dry powder from the fire extinguisher, quickly suppressing the flames. Students observed attentively and witnessed firsthand the power and effectiveness of the fire extinguisher in action. Later, some students had the opportunity to try using the fire extinguisher themselves. Though nervous at first, they were filled with curiosity, and their faces beamed with pride when they successfully extinguished the flames.
The entire fire drill event was lively and energetic, with students enthusiastically participating in each activity. They learned through hands-on practice and grew through their experiences, enhancing their fire safety awareness and emergency response skills. They also gained a deeper understanding and respect for life safety. Our school will continue to create a safe and harmonious environment for students, enabling them to grow and thrive.
