Intangible Cultural Heritage into Campus - Hübschmann Zhan School Station | HuZ Deutsche Schule Shenyang
Nov  17, 2023

Different languages and cultures shape different civilizations, which make up our colorful world. Civilizations interact through diversity, learn through interaction, and grow through learning. To promote the cultural exchange between China and Germany, Hübschmann Zhan School, the Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Provincial Government’s Foreign Affairs Office, and the German Consulate General in Shenyang, have jointly launched an activity on intangible cultural heritage. Through this activity, the students and parents of our school learned about Chinese traditions, made friends, and had fun while working with others.

We invited the distinguished practitioners of intangible cultural heritage to our school to teach and display their skills for students and parents. They are paper-cutting master Feng Yuanping, dough sculpture artisan Yu Qiquan, and Chinese and Western pastry baker Hua Xiaoping.

[Paper-cutting]

With skillful hands, a pair of scissors, and a few pieces of paper, one can create a colorful world. Chinese paper-cutting, as an intangible cultural heritage, has various and special patterns.

Mr. Feng Yuanping taught paper-cutting face-to-face and helped the students improve their skills. They happily shared their work with each other.

[Dough-sculpture ]

Yu Qiquan, a dough sculpture artisan, taught us how to sculpt the Chinese national treasure: the panda. He also made a mini dough sculpture for the students of HuZ school, which was so vivid that it drew the attention of many parents and students. We were all amazed by Mr. Yu’s works and his dough sculpture skills. He created the figurines one by one with his hands. They became the symbols of this Sino-German cultural exchange.

[Moon-cake Making]

She briefly introduced the origin, characteristics, and production of moon cakes. Everyone learned and made exquisite moon cakes under her guidance. When the moon cakes were baking in the oven, the students were excited and could not wait to taste their first homemade moon cakes. Before long, the air was filled with the sweet aroma of the freshly baked moon cakes, creating a festive atmosphere.

The learning of intangible cultural heritage has improved the students’ awareness of protecting and inheriting intangible culture, and stimulated their interest in learning Chinese traditions. HuZ school constantly creates opportunities for the students to encounter, learn, and communicate with each other, so as to sow the seeds of hope for the inheritance and development of different cultures!
