Admissions Policy | HuZ International School

The HuZ International School (HuZ) Admissions Office encourages any qualified student dedicated to the standards and values of HuZ to apply. The admissions process is conducted in an open and transparent manner and is centered on 1) the ability of the applicant to derive educational benefits from HuZ and 2) the capacity of the school. Admissions will not be denied to any student on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality.  While HuZ hopes to accommodate all qualified applicants, in the event of limited positions first priority will be given to previously matriculated students who have kept the moral and academic standards of the school.  A holistic approach will be used to determine other applicants.  This is based on:

· Student motivation

· Entrance examinations

· Previous academic record, if applicable

· Global-mindedness of both students and parents

· Qualities that would enrich the HuZ community

 

All decisions remain at the discretion of the admissions committee.


Required Documents

Applicants are required to submit the following:

· A completed application form

· Photocopy of passport and visa

· A health form completed by the student’s family physician

· Entrance examinations

· Records from any previous schools

· Any applicable fees

 

Personal Interviews

Whenever possible, HuZ encourages parents and students to visit the campus for a guided tour and personal interviews. The school reserves the right to require an interview if it is felt necessary to render a decision on the student’s application.


Admission to the Diploma Program

HuZ has a holistic approach to applicants to the IBDP program.  This allows the school to be flexible in admissions, recognizing that each student is an individual with unique strengths and abilities and that every student can add a new dimension to the IBDP program.  Students will be evaluated for admission according to interviews, application essays, teacher recommendations, language ability, and grades.  HuZ’ goal will be to ensure that each participant in the IBDP program will have a successful and rewarding academic experience. A panel which includes the IBDP coordinator, the head of the HuZ International Section, and one IB teacher designated by the IBDP coordinator will carefully review each applicant and reach a decision on either the acceptance or rejection of the candidate.


Admissions Decision

Within five business days of an admissions decision, parents will be notified in writing.

· Acceptance: if a student is accepted, a registration packet will accompany the acceptance letter.  This will detail the steps that must be taken before the student can matriculate into HuZ.  These steps must be completed within two weeks of the date of the acceptance letter.  Failure to follow these steps may lead to the offer of admission being withdrawn.

· Denial: if a student is denied admission to HuZ a letter or email will be sent as official notification.

· Waitlisted: occasionally a student may be accepted but no space is available. In this event a letter or email will be sent as official notification.  When a space becomes available the student will be notified.

 

Transfer Students

Applicants of any age range who are currently attending other schools are welcome and encouraged to apply to HuZ.  In the event of a transfer to the IBDP program, HuZ will make every effort to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. This will include clear and timely communication between HuZ and the previous school, as well as the student and parents.  To make this transition as smooth as possible, the student’s family must submit all necessary documents (including transcripts, application forms, etc.) to HuZ in a timely manner.  HuZ will strive to ensure that all transfer students develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the IBDP program.


Placement

In general, students will be placed with their age group as of September 1st of the year admitted. At the discretion of the school, the student may be placed in a lower grade if it is deemed to be beneficial to the student. Rarely, a student may be moved into a higher grade. Any grade changes will likely occur within the first semester of school.


Language Selection

HuZ curriculum is offered in Chinese, English, and German.  Students must select the language section in which they wish to study by two weeks before the start of the academic year.  At its discretion, HuZ may decide the student would be more successful in another language division. Students may switch divisions only with the approval of the Headmaster.  The HuZ IBDP program is offered in English, Chinese, and a combination of English and German.


IB Diploma Programme

HuZ offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for students in 11th and 12th grades.  The two-year program is rigorous in nature, preparing students for university study. Standard level courses form the basis of a general education while higher level courses allow students to study their areas of interest more in-depth. The IB diploma is complemented by three special programs: the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge, and the Creativity, Activity, Service program.

Students who choose not to pursue the IB Diploma can also participate in IB courses, receiving a certificate upon successful completion of the course. At times, students may be required to take an IB course if HuZ is not offering an alternative in a particular subject area. Student’s acceptance into the DP will be based on an English entrance exam, or in the case of students wishing to take the GIB DP, a German entrance exam. Students must also interview with the IBDP Coordinator.


Policy Review

A committee that includes the Headmaster, IBDP Coordinator, and two IBDP teachers will review this document yearly. The committee will consider recommendations from all members of the HuZ community. As necessary, this policy will be revised and the HuZ community notified of any changes.
