Last summer, Hübschmann·Zhan School welcomed teachers and students from GZE Gymnasium in Germany. Together, we created meaningful memories in the streets of Shenyang. This summer, as the sun shone brightly once again, we set off for Germany to visit GZE Gymnasium, beginning an enriching exchange experience that transcended borders.

Stepping onto the campus of GZE Gymnasium, the long-anticipated moment finally arrived. German teachers and students warmly welcomed us at the school gate, their smiles easing the fatigue of our long journey. With their guidance, we were introduced to a wide range of engaging campus activities that offered insight into school life in Germany.

In art class, we explored creativity through colour, guided by German art teachers as we expressed our ideas through painting. In the music room, elements from different musical traditions came together to form a harmonious blend. On the sports field, we participated in games that allowed us to experience the energy and enthusiasm of our German peers. Swimming lessons added fun and relaxation, helping us connect on a more personal level. In academic subjects such as math, physics, and chemistry, Germany’s distinctive teaching methods offered us a fresh and engaging perspective on learning, proving that studying can be both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating.

These days immersed in German classes provided new perspectives on our future. We developed a clearer understanding of our interests, sharpened our academic goals, and found renewed motivation to learn. Adapting to school life in a foreign country was both challenging and rewarding. We made efforts to speak German in everyday situations—buying tickets, ordering food, and using public transportation. Each successful interaction helped build our confidence and independence. Through these experiences, we became more self-reliant, adaptable, and resilient.

Our exchange journey also included opportunities to explore Germany’s cultural and academic environment. We visited the University of Bremen, where we walked through its historic campus and attended academic lectures that inspired our imagination about university life. Exploring local cities, we were surrounded by centuries-old architecture that offered a deeper appreciation of Germany’s rich heritage. At the science museum, we encountered a mix of advanced technologies and cultural exhibits that expanded our understanding of modern innovation and historical context.

As the week came to an end, GZE Gymnasium hosted a heartfelt farewell gathering. During this event, we took part in a special origami workshop, creating paper doves from colourful sheets. These doves symbolized our hopes for peace and mutual understanding and reflected the lasting friendship formed between Chinese and German students.

Looking back, we are filled with gratitude and fond memories. We thank GZE Gymnasium for its warm hospitality and thoughtful care, which made us feel at home in a foreign country. We are also grateful for this unforgettable exchange experience, which brought us both personal growth and lasting friendships. While saying goodbye was difficult, we are confident that the connections we made will continue. We look forward to reuniting in the future and continuing this meaningful journey.
