On July 8th, Hübschmann·Zhan School brought together our primary school students in the contest of Spelling Bee. This event served as a testament to the school's commitment to fostering global communication through language skills. The competition, meticulously organized by the English faculty, featured students from both Chinese and German backgrounds, showcasing their linguistic talents in a friendly yet intense contest of vocabulary, listening, spelling, and quick thinking.
Contestants stepped onto the stage one by one to face the challenge of spelling words pronounced by the panel of judges. Each one was given a finite time to correctly spell the word. The rules allowed contestants one opportunity to seek assistance from the audience, engaging the entire room in the spirit of the contest. Some contestants appeared slightly nervous. Others, however, exuded confidence, their eyes sparkling with anticipation and readiness to tackle the challenge head-on.
The intensity of the single-elimination format truly brought out the best in our students. Every contestant was fully engaged, intently listening to every syllable pronounced by the judges. As the contest progressed, the difficulty of the words increased, challenging the students' depth of vocabulary and their ability to recall the correct spelling under pressure and also presenting a wonderful contest to everyone on site.
In the face of words beyond their current knowledge, students made earnest attempts to spell them based on the phonetic cues provided by the pronunciation. This process allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the rules and patterns of English phonetics, which will greatly assist them in their future English language studies. Ultimately, 7 students stood out among all spellers and became the gold, silver and bronze awards winners, they were: G3 Vincent, G2 Andy, and G2 Lara Boss in the Grade 1-3 category; G4 Summer, G6 Patrick, G4 Mia Boss and G4 Jasmine in the Grade 4-6 category. Additionally, 6 students were honored with the title "Spelling Star" in the Spelling Bee, reaping a bountiful harvest of achievements! Let's join together in congratulating them on their progress in language proficiency.
Learning English is a continuous process of accumulation and reinforcement. This competition not only deepened the contestants' vocabulary and honed their ability to respond quickly, but it also comprehensively enhanced their English proficiency. We hope that the Spelling Bee will help more people to experience the charm and power of English language, to develop a persistent learning habit, and to achieve greater success on the path of language learning!
